Description The Integrative Toxicology module continues to build upon the skills and techniques developed in the semester 1 skills for toxicologists module and includes additional laboratory, computer and workshop sessions including a practical class on cytoxicity assays and a workshop using the specialised toxicity prediction software DEREK. Students are encouraged to develop critical thought and analysis and this is assessed in the “integrative” toxicology examination that assesses students ability to integrate different aspects of the field of toxicology and to apply them to problem-solving based examination questions.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Be able to understand and apply different experimental approaches to assess cytotoxicity in cultured cells
  • Use DEREK computer software to predict carcinogenicity and other toxic endpoints of chemicals
  • Demonstrate critical understanding and integration of toxicological ideas including problem solving aspects
  • Use statistical knowledge to design appropriate experiments and to analyse the data produced
