Description This module continues to builds upon the principles and concepts introduced in Year 1 and in module LI Inorganic Chemistry IIa. This module begins with an introduction to organometallic chemistry and metal–metal bonding. The second part covers trends in both physical and chemical properties of transition metal elements and ions across and down the d-block, and discusses synthesis and characterisation of solid-state materials, including an introduction to defects.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and concepts associated with the material delivered in each area;
  • Apply their acquired knowledge and understanding to the solution of relevant problems, including unseen and numerical problems;
  • Apply their knowledge and understanding to rationalise observations and trends, including previously unseen data;
  • Demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the synthesis, properties, structure determination, reactivity and bonding of s-, p- and d-block compounds and solids.
