This module will adopt a cross-disciplinary approach to the assessment and management of suicide and self-harm. The aim of the module would be to improve students’ knowledge and understanding of the biopsychosocial factors underlying self-harm and suicidal behaviours by drawing upon the latest research innovations in the field. The module would also aim to improve students’ skills in identifying, assessing and managing suicidal presentations in clinical practice; and, at an organisational level, promote, maintain and enhance patient safety practices through ongoing learning.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of module, students should be able to:
Recognise the key risk and protective factors for self-harm and suicide and critically appraise the key theoretical frameworks for suicide and suicidal behaviour
Carry out a psychosocial assessment to evaluate self-harm and suicidal behaviour
Critically consider and demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills in assessing and managing individuals who might be at-risk of suicide
Critically consider and demonstrate effective skills in suicide risk mitigation (e.g. co-produce safety plan, refer to specialist services, offer follow-up)
Evaluate key principles, best practices and procedures related to patient safety within a multi-disciplinary team
Critically consider and demonstrate skills in implementing best practice guidelines to promote patient safety
Through creation of a video, students will be expected to succinctly disseminate key research messages; demonstrate a depth of understanding of the complexity of this research area; and communicate in an accessible way
