Description This module covers the key concepts of physical chemistry and materials science. Introducing:
  • Atomic Structure
  • basic structures
  • Amount of Substance
  • Bonding
  • Thermal energy transfer
  • Thermodynamics
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic atomic structure and bonding and how the architecture of atomic and molecular solids affect their properties and use, with particular reference to metals, alloys, ceramics and polymers
  • Apply their acquired knowledge to the solution of simple problems, within the context of the course.Perform calculations involving temperature scales, heat flow and calorimetryDemonstrate an understanding of standard enthalpy changes and the gas laws, within the context of the course;
