Description This introductory module delivers fundamental concepts and principles related to chemical elements, and their compounds. Thus, the module covers physical and chemical changes, valency, chemical formula and chemical reactions (stoichiometry). The concept of the mole is presented, and is used in related calculations.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Balance chemical equations, and use these equations to undertake reacting quantities calculations;
  • Apply their acquired knowledge to the solution of relevant problems within the context of the course, e.g. empirical formula calculations, calculations involving concentrations.
