This module is a specialist module that will cover a variety of topics relating to antimicrobial drugs, such as antibiotics, and the challenges associated with antimicrobial drug resistance. In this module students will learn how different antimicrobials work (their mechanism of action) and how microbes can become resistant to these life saving drugs. We will also cover how anti-microbial resistance is measured in the lab, and how careful and targeted use (stewardship) can help to reduce levels of resistance. We will explore antimicrobial resistance from a global perspective; how resistance arises, spreads around the world, and the global impact of resistance. This module will explore drug discovery in the context of antimicrobials, exploring the methods and challenges associated with developing antibiotics, recent success stories, and how alternative and “outside-the-box” therapies can be used to treat infections and reduce the levels of antimicrobial resistance.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Acquire knowledge about the mechanisms of action and mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobials
Appreciate the global nature and impact of antimicrobial resistance and be enabled for advocacy
Have a clear and critical view of the science and economics of antimicrobial drug discovery, development, and alternative therapies, and appreciate their importance for society
Be familiar with current research surrounding antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance.
