Description
This module explores notions of climate justice and how theories of sustainability are constantly changing and contested. It will first look at why climate justice is needed and how it relates to different groups, such as youth, marginalised groups etc before turning to consider what voices are heard/excluded and the mechanisms behind this. Particular attention will be paid to how climate action develops and how this is mediated by governments and multinational organisations, especially in relation to greenwashing. Various case study groups/locations will be examined to demonstrate the unequal power relations that exist within this area. The module then moves on the discuss how theories around sustainability are developed, what dominant discourses have developed and how these are contested. Again, attention will be paid to which voices gain prominence and the reasons behind this. Detailed attention will be paid to climate change deniers and how such theories are funded, spread and understood by the general public.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
articulate the meaning of climate justice and how this will be understood by a wide range of groups and how this will differ by location
