Description
The module introduces students to the research methods that they will use throughout their study and into their subsequent careers. This module mainly concentrates on qualitative methods (quantitative are covered in a separate module) and will encourage students to reflect on their own positionality as well as discussing the theoretical and practical application of a range of methods. The module then moves onto fieldwork project design. This will take the form of small group seminars in advance of a fieldcourse. Students will develop their own group projects with the help of a staff member, exploring issues around the ‘messiness’ of fieldwork, ethics, sampling, robust data collection and analysis. The field course will give students the opportunity to try out their group project in a real field setting.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Critically appraise a wide range of research methods
Reflect on your own positionality and how this impacts upon research
Understand the challenges of designing and undertaking research projects in the field
Select the most appropriate methodologies for a chosen research project
Design and implement a small-scale field project and critically analyse field data.
