This module is aimed at improving the communication, data handling, team working and laboratory skills of students and is embedded throughout the taught 28628 semester 1 module of the MSc Toxicology. Students are taught to develop their research, communication, and presentation skills which they develop independently by undertaking exercises in literature searching/information retrieval and communication of their findings in written reports and summarising a scientific paper in the form of a graphical abstract. Students also learn how to design experiments and to apply statistical analysis to toxicological data. There are also more specialised IT skills including data handling workshops (cytochrome P450 data handing workshop) and practical classes (Aspirin practical and HPLC data analysis workshop)

By the end of this module, students should be able to:
Retrieve scientific information from a scientific paper, read and understand and summarise in the form of a graphical abstract
Undertake a range of practical techniques and data analysis.Be able to undertake quantitative analysis of experimental data and determine concentrations of metabolites in biological samples
Be able to analyse and interpret the data produced and to produce laboratory reports
Be able to analyse and interpret data from data handling classes and workshops
