This is to provide the foundation knowledge and skills needed for engagement in health protection and health improvement. It will provide technical skills to analyse an outbreak of communicable disease and other chemical and biological sources. It will examine communicable disease surveillance and there will be epidemiological studies for infectious diseases and environmental epidemiology related to exposure from pollution sources. This module is concerned with protecting the health of communities, and translating that into health improvement. There is an emphasis on the collective responsibility for health, its protection and disease prevention, it recognises the key role of the state, linked to a concern for the underlying socio-economic and wider determinants of health, as well as disease and emphasises partnerships with all of those who contribute to the health of the population. It links closely with the Public Health Integration module.
