Description
Hydrogeology explores the movement and quality of groundwater, which makes up the vast majority of Earth’s liquid freshwater. This specialist module builds on prior geoscience and environmental science knowledge to examine groundwater’s role in addressing sustainability challenges across sectors such as water resources, waste management, engineering, geoenergy, and climate resilience. Students will learn to develop conceptual models in the context of water resources and groundwater contamination and apply analytical and computer-based techniques to investigate groundwater contamination and protection. The module equips students with practical problem-solving skills and a systems-thinking approach relevant to careers in environmental consultancy, resource management, and sustainable development

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Calculategroundwater flow rates and velocities using standard hydrogeological methods.
Interpret groundwater chemical compositions based on environmental and geological factors.
Apply standard calculation techniques and computer modelling tools to simulate groundwater systems.
Solve practical groundwater-related problems, particularly those involving contamination and resource management.
