This module will provide students with an introduction to the conflict between the use of natural resources, growing environmental degradation and increasing population. It assesses the difficulties in distinguishing human impacts from natural environmental changes and examines a number of specific environmental issues grouped within broad inter-disciplinary themes spanning key areas of research excellence in GEES including ‘Global Wicked Problems’, ‘Forests and mangroves’, ‘Plastics’, ‘Urban Environments’ and ‘Critical literacy’. It will also introduce students to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and how they are implemented in several different regions. Elements of the module will be field based with students visiting several sites in Dubai/Abu Dhabi to explore real life projects combating a variety of environmental issues.
