Description Students attend the laboratory one day per week to perform a series of experiments that cover the basic measurement techniques involving measurements of temperature, length, light, heat, voltage and electrical current. Students perform experiments that explore phenomena encountered in first year lecture modules on classical mechanics and relativity, optics and waves, quantum mechanics, temperature and matter, electromagnetism and electric circuits.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Make measurements with appropriate scientific instruments.
  • Keep good notes and write a laboratory report.
  • Analyse data using error calculations and curve fitting.
  • Plan and execute a short lab project.
  • Identify sources of experimental error and know how to treat them.
  • Work independently and in pairs.
