Description Discover is a foundational module focusing on personal and professional development and preparing students for academia – the community, environment and activities associated with success in higher education and beyond. It equips students to pursue knowledge, engage in intellectual enquiry and critical thinking, and develop and share ideas within specialist and across broader disciplines. The curriculum consists of two interrelated components; i) understanding and developing knowledge, skills and wider attributes through university study and co-curricular activity; and ii) a programme-specific extended project that engages students in independent research in their subject area. In combination the module emphasises the joy of learning whilst developing key academic and professional skills, attitudes and behaviours necessary for success in study, in work and in life.

The Discover module equips students with essential competencies in Geography, Earth, and Environmental Science, laying a solid foundation for both personal and professional growth throughout their degree. It encourages students to explore and reflect on their personal and academic development, while addressing key scientific challenges and advancements. Within their disciplinary area, students will examine current challenges and critical themes in a small group format, allowing them to explore ideas and develop critical, analytical approaches to topics ranging from climate justice and inequality, migration, urbanisation and sustainable cities, green infrastructure, sustainable solutions, biodiversity loss, pollution, resource extraction natural hazards. Students will learn to effectively communicate scientific information and critically evaluate its dissemination in society. Through collaborative group work, they will enhance their career readiness by researching discipline specific topics which fostering innovative thinking and skill development. The module also offers structured academic support and dedicated space for personal and professional reflection through the tutorial system, promoting lifelong learning and development.

Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to engage critically with key discipline-specific topics in the field of geography, planning, earth and environmental science and the sustainability issues that connect them.
  • Demonstrate research and project management skills by effectively planning, organising, and executing an independent research project.
  • Evaluate their own personal strengths and areas for development in relation to the professional skills and ethical behaviours required for success in the relevant field of geography, earth and environmental science
  • Engage in reflective practice to enhance personal and professional growth.

6000 word Group Research Project (75%)
