Description

This module will aim to develop in the students an understanding of how bonding controls the chemistry, structure and engineering properties of materials. To introduce some basic concepts of crystallography. To introduce the concept of phase diagrams and to apply phase diagrams to describe the equilibrium alloy constitution and microstructure for a number of binary alloy systems.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the chemical bonding of common materials and crystal defects;
  • Perform simple crystallographic manipulations and calculations;
  • Have very basic knowledge of crystal defects, vacancies, dislocations and interfaces;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the main features of selected practical phase diagrams and the elementary principles of microstructure development.
