Description This module represents the discipline-specific part of the Materials Design and Professional Skills module for level 1 Engineering students. It produces Metallurgy and Materials Engineering students to the application of design processes employed in original equipment manufacturers, component manufacturers and materials manufacturers for the transportation industries. Students will learn types of design - Original, Adaptive or Variant. Design process - Conceptual, Preliminary and Detailed.

This module will cover: Materials in design, Evolution of engineering materials in transportation, Interaction between function, material, process and shape, Elementary materials and processing selection methods.
Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Appreciate the development of materials and manufacturing processing to enhance the performance of cars and aeroplanes;
  • Understand how shape influences the properties of a component and calculate merit indices for simple structures based on primary properties;
  • Apply selection method for materials and manufacturing processes.
