Description The module extends knowledge of materials design and professional skills employed in the materials engineering discipline.

Semester 1:
Materials selection in mechanical design - materials selection charts, materials index, case studies on materials selections Problem based learning on aspects of material/process selection and material characterisation for specified applications (e.g. heart valves, metallic hip & knee protheses,) using case studies.(b)

Semester 2:
Background on CAD, CAD exercise using Solidworks software. Problem based learning on aspects of material/process selection and material characterisation for specified applications (e.g. corrosion of hip protheses, magnets in medicine) using case studies.(d)
Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Understand and apply material selection process to mechanical design of product;
  • Appreciate equipment manufacture, materials selection and perform critical evaluation of marketing literature;
  • Apply CAD to present graphical information;
  • Recognise the values of effective teamworking, and ally principles of time management and project planning;
  • Take effective part in team-based oral and written reports.

Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessments: 100% continuous assessment (coursework), divided into 6 distinct components (materials selection tutorial sheet, computer-aided design tutorial sheet and case studies 1 through 4).
