Description
The module will introduce a range of techniques for characterising materials. These comprise microscopy (optical and electron), non-destructive testing, x-ray diffraction, calorimetry, surface analysis and various techniques for measuring electrical and magnetic properties.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:Use an optical microscope and interpret optical micrographs;Use an electron microscope and interpret electron micrographs;Understand when to apply differential thermal analysis and differential scanning calorimetry and be able to interpret graphs from either technique;Apply and interpret x-ray diffraction methods;Have an appreciation of the range of non-destructive testing techniques available;Understand a range of electrical and magnetic parameters and how to measure them;Appreciate the range of surface characterisation methods available and when to apply each.
