From the materials used in drug delivery through to the release profiles of systems – this module looks at the stages involved in drug delivery development. The module covers the important characteristics that must be considered when designing a drug delivery system, including Issues and importance of stages in drug product development; Routes of administration and associated dosage forms, Polymers in drug delivery, Micro/nanoparticulate drug delivery, Kinetics and diffusion, Macromolecular drug delivery, Bioavailability, Disperse Systems, Liposomal drug delivery and Modified release.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:
Define and use important terms and vocabulary relevant to drug delivery research and development;
Describe the important design characteristics of a range of dosage forms and drug delivery systems, and carry out appropriate calculations where necessary;
Describe and evaluate current approaches in drug delivery;
Demonstrate an understanding of, and evaluate future opportunities and possible advances in drug delivery.
