Description
The aim of the module is to develop team working, design skills, creativity and innovation, through an interdisciplinary team design project, with reference to and integration of a variety of areas of engineering. Student teams are required to engage in the full product design process from initial concepts to complete product specification and design.
Syllabus
The product design process
Identification of market needs
Product requirements
Concept generation, identify a range of solutions
Selection of final design solution
Material selection
Manufacturing requirements
Commercial, environmental, sustainability and risk assessment aspects
Complete design of the product
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Investigate and define a problem and identify constraints including environmental and sustainability limitations, health and safety and risk assessment issues. (D1)
Understand customer and user needs and the importance of considerations such as aesthetics (D2)
Identify and manage cost drivers (D3)
Use creativity to establish innovative solutions. (D4)
Ensure fitness for purpose for all aspects of the problem including production, operation, maintenance and disposal (D5)
Manage the design process and evaluate outcomes (D6)
Demonstrate a knowledge of characteristics of particular equipment, processes or products. (P1)
Understand the use of technical literature and other information sources (P4)
Demonstrate awareness of the nature of intellectual property and contractual issues (P5)
Work with technical uncertainty (P8)
Understand engineering principles and apply them to analyse key engineering processes (E1)
Identify, classify and describe the performance of systems and components through the use of analytical methods and modelling techniques (E2)
Apply quantitative methods and computer software relevant to mechanical and related engineering disciplines, to solve engineering problems (E3)
Understand and apply a systems approach to engineering problems (E4)
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of commercial and economic context of engineering processes (S1)
Demonstrate a knowledge of management techniques which may be used to achieve engineering objectives within that context (S2)
Understand the requirement for engineering activities to promote sustainable development (S3)
Demonstrate an awareness of the framework of relevant legal requirements governing engineering activities, including personnel, health, safety, and risk (including environmental risk) issues (S4)
Understand the need for a high level of professional and ethical conduct in engineering (S5)
Assessment
21834-01 : Final Module Mark : Coursework (100%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions
100% continuous assessment, presentation (20%) and written report (80%).
In addition students are required to attend 75% (minimum) of the synoptic engineering lectures in order to pass the module.
Coniston team-building exercises – Pass/Fail based on attendance. NB Students must successfully complete Coniston to pass the module.
Other
The Coniston team-building exercises take place during Semester 1
