Description The module aims introduce students to the basic concepts, principles, and laws relating to statics and dynamics, with reference to the application of mechanics and materials in sports.

Topics covered will include:
Basic Definitions - Scalar and Vector Quantities; Types of Vector; Types of Force
Statics - Newton's Laws of Motion; Mechanical friction; Moment of a force about a point; Free Body Diagrams; Coplanar Equilbrium; Forces and moments
Dynamics - Uniformly accelerated linear motion; Trajectories of projectiles; Work, power, energy, and conservation of energy; Linear momentum, linear impulse, and conservation of linear momentum
Materials Behaviour - Stress; Strain; Elastic / Non-Elastic Behaviour; Elastic Strain Energy; Young Modulus
Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Define, describe and explain vector and scalar quantities, Newton's laws of motion, linear displacement, velocity, and acceleration, centre of gravity, mass, stability of equilibrium;
  • Understand and solve problems involving uniformly accelerated linear motion, projectile trajectories, the principles of conservation of energy and conservation of linear momentum, applying Newton's laws of motion, using force - acceleration approach, work - energy approach, and impulse - momentum approach;
  • Understand and solve simple static equilibrium problems - set up a free body diagram; identify the forces acting; establish the conditions for equilibrium; then solve the problem;
  • Define, describe and explain the elastic and non-elastic behaviour of relevant materials, and display an understanding of strain energy etc.
