Description The aim of the module is to enable students to build and validate discrete event simulation models from real system descriptions or observations, and conduct statistically-sound experimentation and predictions of system performance under new conditions.

Syllabus
  • Discrete event simulation;
  • simulation of simple systems on paper;
  • visual interactive model building;
  • stochasticity, warm-up, run length and replication;
  • verification validation and experimentation.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student should be able to:
  • Identify, classify and describe the performance of systems and components through the use of analytical methods and modelling techniques (E2)
  • Apply quantitative methods and computer software relevant to mechanical and related engineering disciplines, to solve engineering problems (E3)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of contexts in which engineering knowledge can be applied (e.g. operations and management, technology, development, etc) (P3)
  • Work with technical uncertainty (P8)
