This module is core for all HOME- EU Foundation Year students in EPS and is designed to develop a range of communication and transferable skills in context. Communication orally, in writing, individually and in teams, will be explored. There will be opportunities for students to: - familiarise themselves with University systems and their use – e-mail, iVLE etc; -develop skills in scientific communication (writing and presenting), literature search and referencing; -complete a significant piece of research aimed at enhancing their knowledge of science and engineering careers in general and their own chosen discipline in particular.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Prepare and deliver an oral presentation, exploring and improving their team work skills;
Research, plan and deliver an outline for an essay on a technical subject;
Analyse and critically assess some generic data
Demonstrate an understanding of the significance and practices of proper referencing in the field of science and engineering and in the academic setting;

Assessment Methods & Exceptions
Assessments: 100% continuous assessment to include: - Short group presentation and associated script (40%) - 4 page Essay (40%) - Data assignment,(20%)
Reassessment: 2 Hr written unseen examination in the supplementary period – students will be asked to complete 1 question from each of two sections: section 1 – a choice of essay topics related to issues affecting modern science, engineering and society; section 2 – a choice of questions related to the use of presentation techniques and tools used to research and deliver an effective scientific talk.
