Description This module provides the students with an overview of the key aspects of transport planning and the development of transport policy, with a particular focus on sustainability. The module provides a number of detailed case studies of cities which have addressed sustainability in different ways. Detailed information is provided about the impacts of transport on sustainability at both a local and global scale. The module will allow the students to consider alternative futures with more sustainable transport systems and to consider the implications of such changes on society and lifestyles. The module will provide a foundation on which further work, for example thesis writing, in the area of global sustainability can be based.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • identify the key facets of transport planning and the policy process.
  • define key impacts of transport across the globe which contribute to the lack of sustainability of our current transport system and suggest measures to mitigate these problems
  • build up specialist detailed knowledge of one area of impact through undertaking detailed research in that area
  • develop own ideas on what would characterise a more sustainable transport system and the changes that would be required to implement such a system
