Description This module aims to embed students' learning and their understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a practicing civil engineer.

This module exposes MSc Civil Engineering and Management students to the fundamental principles of professionalism, teamworking, leadership & management, Ethics, Health & Safety and the environment. It explains how such issues should be considered in an integrated fashion in the conceptual design and construction of a Civil Engineering project over its life cycle. In addition, the module examines how students should communicate effectively nontechnically to an audience of expansive and varied/conflicting views which they present at a mock public consultation. The module is inspired by the ICE Communications Competition and is based on the ICE, Royal Academy of Engineering and Engineering Council practices and standards.

Groups will propose a solution for an urban or rural development and then prepare the necessary materials for a public consultation. Students will apply their engineering judgement and skills to propose a design which they believe to be workable, and use communication skills (written, presentation and oral) to prepare a consultation strategy, deliver a presentation and answer questions typical of those raised at a public consultation.

Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Examine the fundamentals of engineering conceptual design
  • Analyse critically and holistically the impact of sustainability, health & safety and the environment on design
  • Demonstrate professionalism and implement its associated skills
  • Compare and contrast the characteristics of managers and leaders in engineering
  • Identify the stakeholders of a project, their role, their impact on a project and how they should be managed during a public consultation process
  • Prepare a proposed development scheme within the brief supplied;
  • Prepare written and oral communications suitable for a diverse audience including both technical and non-technical stakeholders
