Description This model will develop boarder skills and knowledge of the planning process associated with infrastructure projects with emphasis on ground related projects. Key areas covered include: Building Information Modelling related to ground works, H&S issues, earthworks, planning processes, novel materials and general ground works management.

Students will work in groups deliver design concept for planning consideration for an infrastructure build (focussed on the ground). Teams will be made up of students from different programme offering a unique chance to work across discipline and through this develop teamwork skills. Thus this module will provide experience of working in multi-discipline teams on a significant infrastructure project.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Evaluate and critically appraise planning process for the development of infrastructure projects;
  • Appreciate the use and critically appraise the merits of various planning tools, e.g. BIM;
  • Evaluate the need for excavation stabilisation and the fundamentals that govern excavation stability and remediation;
  • Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams dealing with complex problems to tight deadlines.

3 minute presentation - the pitch to a ‘dragon’s den’ group (20%)
Question and Answers following presentation from panel members representing different groups involved in infrastructure development and planning (40%)
