Description Fundamentals of low temperature fuel cells (LTFC) applied to alkaline fuel cells (AFC), phosphoric acid fuel cells (PAFC), Polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFC), high and intermediate temperature PEFC (HT/IT-PEFC) and direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC). Fundamentals of low temperature electrolysis (LTE) with respect to alkaline and polymer electrolyte electrolysis.
Theory of the electrochemical and thermo-dynamical fundamentals of low temperature fuel cells. Materials used for the components (electrolytes, catalysts, electrodes, bipolar plates etc.) of the different cells: materials properties, conduction mechanisms, requirements for the individual components. Manufacturing, stacking, and degradation mechanisms. System components, design, and fuels. Basics of electrochemical characterisation and modelling. Application of fuel cell principles to electrolysis. Technology outlook, future markets and main development challenges and trends.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Describe theoretically the electrochemical and thermo-dynamical fundamentals of LTFC and LTE.
  • Explain the fundamental mechanisms of the electrochemical reactions at the electrode / electrolyte interfaces and the fundamental mechanisms of conduction of the individual components of LTFC and LTE cells and stacks.
  • Explain the critical parameters in materials selection and the selection of operating conditions for LTFC and LTE.
  • Analyse data describing the electrochemical performance and explain main degradation mechanisms of the performance of LTFC and LTE.
  • Describe advantages and disadvantages of LTFC and LTE, also in comparison with other energy technologies.
  • Apply this knowledge to moderately complex problems.
  • Choose appropriate technology when faced with a moderately complex engineering design task.
