Description
Research projects can be carried out in a broad range of topics related to Materials Science and Engineering in any of the Research Groups within the School of Metallurgy and Materials. The School in which the project is based will provide the research supervisor and will arrange for all necessary facilities and resources. The project involves full-time research for one third of the academic year starting from May until September. Interim assessment will be conducted towards the end of June in the form of a 10-page report and a 30 min interview, which will be assessed by two academic staff. The project report (which should be a maximum of 7,500 words in length) will be internally assessed by two academic staff. Based on the project results, each student will be required to give a project presentation (20 min talk plus 10 min for questions) which will be marked by two academic staff.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Understand the use of technical literature and other information sources
Demonstrate an understanding of state-of-the-art developments in a specific area relevant to the research project allocated
Use research techniques and materials testing methods for the research and development of advanced materials
Demonstrate the ability to plan, conduct and report on an extended research project in the form of a dissertation at MSc level
Demonstrate the ability for project management, time management , information management and working in groups
Demonstrate the skill of effective written and oral communication appropriate to the intended audience
Understand the need for a high level of professional and ethical conduct in engineering (S5)
Demonstrate a thorough understanding of current practice and its limitations and some appreciation of likely new developments
Apply materials techniques taking account of a range of commercial and industrial constraints
Demonstrate an awareness of developing technologies related to materials engineering
