Description The module covers two related topics.
  • Traffic Engineering covers the principles and practice of road traffic engineering and planning.
  • Highway Design and Capacity covers the errors associated with design traffic volumes, the procedure for calculating the capacity of highway links, geometric designs and standards, design speed and junction design and capacity.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Understand the principles of traffic engineering and traffic control and queuing theory, and be familiar with the data collection and analysis methods involved.
  • Understand the principles for the analysis of highway capacity, highway design standards and junction design
  • Understand the need and nature of transport assessments and associated public enquiries. Develop a transport assessment and be able to contribute towards a basic public enquiry.
  • Analyse and design a highway junction for a given situation and calculate its capacity, making use of computer software.
  • Apply statistical methods for data collection and analysis.
Assessment 28090-04 : Module Mark : Mixed (100%)

3-hour written unseen examination (50%) + Coursework (50%)
