Description This module develops the topic of projects by discussing three main areas:

1. Understanding the business need,
2. Developing the project and
3. Project execution planning.

Each of these areas focuses on different aspects of the project, from the business case, business benefits and values, to design issues and innovation, to safety planning and management, to handover and close out. Planning, scheduling, risk management, estimating and project control are also presented.

Significant new content has been included on: Value Enhancing Practices, Managing Safety, Procurement and Managing Quality.

The purpose of this module is to define tools for project management that are relevant to all aspects of the work of the project manager and further analyse the move from chaos to control in project work.

This module is centred on identifying but also critically analysing these tools and encouraging students to have both a comprehensive, holistic view of their nature and uses and develop an ability to connect, disconnect and recombine details and nuances for their own understanding and to increase their effectiveness as project managers in the workplace.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Understand the link between projects and the values and strategy of the organisation.
  • Be aware of the main aspects of developing a project, both from a more traditional, established perspective and from the point of view of innovation.
  • Be able to describe the process of project execution planning and reflect on the benefits and critical success factors.
  • List the key activities involved in project planning.
  • Describe project implementation principles including managing safety, risk and quality.
  • Describe the common conventional approaches to project control (planning & controlling execution)
  • Understand the key steps involved in the early stages of a project, and the role of the overall project manager during this phase.

Reassessment:

The students will be able to resubmit their work for the ATQs and report at a later date. The quiz may be moderated and reopened if necessary and taken again online at any time.
