Description This group project will tackle industrial- or research-led projects in the design of materials, their characterisation, processing, and testing.These link to the requirements in the QAA Materials benchmark statement of 2017, in particular:3.5 Materials graduates will have had opportunities, through practical work, for first hand experience of a range of techniques and materials (artefact analysis, characterisation, processing, computational simulation testing and so on) designed to devel op the ability to plan, implement and interpret experimental investigations. 3.8 Those graduating with a degree in Materials will havegood professional judgement, are able to exercise critical thought, and, having gained experience, take responsibility for the direction of important tasks.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Convey and present complex advanced technical information to an experienced technical audience using written reports and orally;
  • Make a project plan that takes into account aims, previous work, available resources, complexity of tasks, health and safety, and risk mitigation to achieve an agreed set of objectives;
  • Work as part of a team to achieve a set of deliverables as specified in the project plan;
  • Use complex characterisation, testing and simulation techniques to obtain data relevant to achieve the project’s objectives;
  • Analyse data effectively, and discuss results in their context;
  • Adjust the project plan as necessary to deal with unforeseen circumstances.
