Description
This module provides students with the opportunity to take on, as part of a team, real life conceptual designs drawn from Engineering Grand Challenges that address the railway industry, providing an opportunity to apply cross-disciplinary working to solve problems.
The project design aspects of the work will aim at enhancing students’ awareness regarding challenges imposed on the railway industry by key issues such as introduction of new technologies, regulation, managing a linear asset, climate change and sustainability, and the way these impact their role as engineers, working in teams.
Students will work together in cross-disciplinary teams to provide design solutions to railway engineering project scenarios using railway design simulation and modelling.
This module will be supported by a series of taught sessions run over semesters 1 and 2 to provide support at key stages of project work. These will target key requirements to deliver successful integrated projects designs. These sessions will include:
(1) The systems engineering approach and design philosophy (2) Project Planning, management and effective team working (3) Health and Safety aspects and impact on design (4) Sustainability aspects of design, including stakeholder engagement; ethics; human factors (5) Why projects fail – nature of risk in working/business operations; risk management, (6) Key aspects of railway design, management and control.
Teams will produce a simulation of a railway system as part of the final task.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Work with limited or contradictory information and locate further information relevant to the task
Demonstrate key skills to ensure successful completion of a railway design project, taking into account the need to optimise a multi-faceted system
Demonstrate an ability to use railway traffic management micro and macro simulation tools
Evaluate the key issues involved in working towards a team goal and how difficulties can be resolved
Evaluate the concepts of hazard and risk, and carry out an appropriate risk assessment, suggesting appropriate risk control measures in accordance with the hierarchy of risk control for successful completion of a design project
Appraise the role of the engineer in the design process taking account of the broader issues of regulation, sustainability, ethics, environmental concerns, human and business constraints in the context of the railway industry
Evaluate their individual responsibility as global citizens and as professional engineers
Formulate solutions to complex projects
Undertake critical reflection, analysis and evaluation throughout their engineering practice
Present and defend effectively design concepts when exposed to detailed critical questioning

Assessment Methods & Exceptions
Assessment:
Final report of maximum 4000 words, detailing simulation modelling outcomes and capacity assessment plus any required elements of budget and sustainability (50%) Presentation of results including (i) Lab inspection (30%); (ii) 1 minute pitch (10%); (iii) 15 minutes of Q&A (20%) Peer assessment will be used to moderate the final mark by ±5 marks across the group.
