This module describes current and future perspectives of biomaterials driven from clinical need and technological innovation. Effective medical device design will be discussed in terms of essential materials science aspects, with an emphasis on structure-function relationships.
Some basic human and cell biology will be introduced in order to understand how materials and the body respond to each other and how biomaterials may be engineered to illicit a desired response for a variety of medical treatments.
The overall aim of this module is to furnish the student with the necessary knowledge and language to effectively communicate with other scientists, clinicians and engineers working within the highly interdisciplinary area of biomaterials science for healthcare technologies.

By the end of the module students should be able to:
Describe the clinical need for innovate biomaterials in wide variety of medical disciplines.
Understand the current landscape of the biomaterials research field and industrial sector.
Define the classes of biomaterials and key structure-function relationships required for effective medical devices
Demonstrate an awareness of key biomaterial interactions with the body and how these may be manipulated through materials design.
Communicate ideas effectively with biomaterials scientists, engineers and clinicians from other disciplines.
