Description This module introduces key technical aspects related to the use of additive manufacturing or 3D printing technologies within the healthcare technologies field. Learning is contextualised through the use of industrial case studies and demonstrations of existing custom devices while also understanding the regulatory framework.
Learning spans from understanding the specific design considerations for additive manufacturing technologies, knowing the fundamental principles of different processes and the various materials that may be formed using these methods. Current uses of these technologies will be reviewed and development opportunities within the healthcare sector discussed to provide a future perspective.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Describe key features of various additive manufacturing or 3D printing technologies
  • Select appropriate manufacturing processes for different biomaterials considering the intended healthcare application
  • Understand the implications that additive manufacturing has on design development for medical devices
  • Demonstrate an ability to recognise opportunities within the healthcare sector for additive manufacturing or 3D printing
