Description This modules covers the following:
  • Introduction to tunnelling in its broadest sense and not only the construction of transportation tunnels, but also includes lectures on 'trenchless' methods used for installation and renewal of utilities.
  • Review different types of underground construction and their impact on the built environment.
  • Introduction to numerical modelling (specifically focusing upon Finite Element Modelling) to investigate soils in engineering applications, considering: how these methods simulate soil behaviour; the limitations of such methods; and how these methods can be of use in engineering applications.
  • Introduction to use of computer package for underground construction applications.
  • Introduction to Rock Engineering: Engineering properties of rocks, rock as a construction material, application of rock engineering in underground construction.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Distinguish and differentiate the different methods of underground construction.
  • Assess methods of tunnel construction and their related design considerations.
  • Evaluate the impact of tunnelling/underground construction on the built environment.
  • Understand the application, and limitations, of finite element numerical modelling with soil behaviour.
  • Evaluate the behaviour of rock as an engineering material and how this affects underground construction.
