Description Medical devices are gaining more and more importance to the UK economy. Their widespread use has become an important factor that keeps people mobile and within the UK workforce. Furthermore, the ageing global population means that this demand is set to increase globally, which represents a significant opportunity for the UK industrial base.

This module will cover the basic classes of medical device that are currently available in the UK. The devices will be introduced according to both their classifications (I-IV), but will be organised according to the systems that they are applied in (cardiovascular, ophthalmic, integumentary, musculoskeletal, digestive, urinary). As part of the assessment, students will be asked to design a simple device and then write a portfolio to make an argument of how it should be classified and what work will be required to take it into humans.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module, students should be able to:
  • Understand the major classes of medical device that are currently available and give specific examples of each class, along with justfications for the classification.
  • Demonstrate the ability to make a judgment on the classification of a medical device on the basis of its function.
  • Outline the main steps that must be taken to take a medical device to the point of human use.
  • Identify major innovations in the development of specific medical devices in recent years, which have revolutionised patient treatment.
