Description The advanced railway engineering module examines key concerns for railways in a global context. Students will consider the role of railways in meeting the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals including key aspects relating to sustainability, decarbonisation, emissions and urban development. The module will also look at the impact of emerging technologies specifically including railway digitisation, and will cover advances in modelling, simulation and data analysis techniques to advance the effectiveness and efficiency of rail systems.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically assess key global issues for railways and railway systems and how these fit within the UN Sustainability Development Goals;
  • Describe how modelling, simulation, or data analysis methodologies can enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of railway systems;
  • Demonstrate the ability to use railway operational modelling software (albeit at a basic level);
  • Propose methods for enhancing and developing current and future railway systems;
  • Describe what digitisation means in a railway context (i.e. the “digital railway”).
Assessment 34507-01 : Module Mark : Mixed (100%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:
3,000-word written report (50%);
