Description	The module covers the following. Pavement design covers the concepts of empirical and analytical pavement design. It also covers pavement structural evaluation that addresses the concept of assessing the structural condition of pavements, selecting appropriate maintenance treatments and designing overlays. Pavement analysis covers material characterisation, pavement response, Hooke’s law, the Method of Equivalent Thickness (MET), pavement performance and analysis of pavement defects. The design and performance of the drainage systems of roads and their impact on the performance of pavements by considering fundamentals, design-erosion control, design factors, Influence of road geometrics, pavement surface/shoulders/kerb flow, longitudinal drainage, transverse drainage.
Learning Outcomes	By the end of the module students should be able to: Identify the basic properties of the materials used in pavement analysis and evaluation and specify its requirements and describe the potential performance problems of road materials. Describe and compute the stress and strain magnitude within an idealised multi layered elastic pavement structure and assess the tests used to characterise the various load layers. Use and apply both empirical and analytical methods of pavement design and pavement overlay design procedures Describe and model the deterioration mechanism of roads. Recognise and assess real or potential problems associated with road drainage and follow a rational approach to design each type of drainage system.
