Description
Independent Study Undertaking Independent Study within an industrial research context allows students to take ownership of their personal, professional and academic development.
This is a specialist module that intends to provide Engineering Doctorate students with the opportunity to to (i) identify the gaps in their current skills set and resources/tools to address those needs (ii) acquire new knowledge and/or skills (iii) demonstrate how those new abilities/capacities can be used to enhance their research/professional practice.
Students must develop evidence to demonstrate that the chosen ISM activities are relevant to their present and future practice, and produce a report – which must be their own work and supported by evidence – on how they have met the goals of their ISM; the report must include both a reflective summary of their learning experience as well as a technical summary related their research area.
Learning Outcomes

Monitor their own learning, including the identification of learning needs and their learning development by planning acquisition of skills to address identified learning needs;
Demonstrate a reflective and self-critical approach to personal and professional development;
Critically evaluate the learning and skills gained from academic and professional study and its application to the workplace.
