Description This module comprises two main subject areas: Engineering Production in Construction, and Construction Project Risk Management.

Engineering Production introduces

and discusses the main drivers for change in the construction industry over the last decade, and the techniques which have been, and are being developed to identify and manage improvements in value and decrease in waste of all kinds. Topics addressed include Managing the Process, Managing Quality, Managing Value, Managing Waste, Benchmarking, Managing People, Relationships and Communications, Managing Time, Managing Project Information, BIM (Building Information Modelling)

Construction Project Risk Management

discusses the concepts of risk and hazard, principles and best practice, lessons learnt from construction disasters, treatments of construction project risks, project risk management tools and techniques (Qualitative and Quantitative Methods), guidance in practical risk management (case studies) and legal aspects. Students will be shown how the application of these techniques enables a better understanding of project risk at all stages of the project, enabling improved design, construction and operation.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Outline the significance of the main drivers for change in the construction industry.
  • Demonstrate understanding of some of the key techniques being developed and/or used for implementing improvements in the industry.
  • Apply the knowledge gained about selected techniques to case studies and tackle issues in the construction industry
  • Describe the basic risk and safety assessment tools and techniques.
  • Describe the concept of project risk management.
  • Apply risk assessment tools to tackle issues in the construction industry.
