Description Analytical Approaches for Geotechnics introduces simple techniques that can be used to undertake 'hand calculations' to facilitate analysis of various geotechnical engineering situations. This includes moment analysis, force analysis, graphical force balance, lateral earth pressures and these are introduced and contextualised for analysis in examples of shallow and deep foundations, slopes, reinforced soil and retaining walls. Partial and bulk factors of safety are considered, as are approaches recommended in design codes.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Evaluate and apply basic theories of soil mechanics to determine how the ground conditions will impose/transmit loads with respect to various geotechnical assets (such as slopes, retaining structures and foundations)
  • [contributing to: AHEP - M1 (K&S); AHEP - M2(K&S); AHEP - M3 (K&S); AHEP - M4 (K&S); AHEP - C12 (K&S); AHEP - C13 (K&S)]
  • Evaluate and apply empirical and analytical methods (e.g. force or moment analysis), understanding the limitations of these approaches, to consider engineering problems (such as slopes, foundations or retaining walls)
  • [contributing to: AHEP - M1 (K&S); AHEP - M2(K&S); AHEP - M3 (K&S); AHEP - M4 (K&S)]
  • Evaluate the suitability of different foundation (deep and shallow) and earth retaining structures for a variety of ground and loading conditions, critical appraising essential factors controlling performance [contributing to: AHEP - M5 (K&S); AHEP - C6 (K&S); AHEP - C9 (K&S); AHEP - C13 (K&S)]
  • Evaluate the stability different slopes (such as embankments, cuttings, or rock slopes) for a variety of ground and loading conditions, using analytical techniques, evaluating essential factors controlling performance
  • [contributing to: AHEP - M5 (K&S); AHEP - C6 (K&S); AHEP - C9 (K&S); AHEP - C13 (K&S)]
  • Takes responsibility for decisions taken, is adaptable and resilient when considering challenging/changing environments and manages own time
  • [contributing to: AHEP - M1 (K&S); AHEP - M5 (K&S); AHEP - C6 (K&S); AHEP - M16 (K&S)]
