Numerical Approaches and Design in Geotechnics introduces method used to undertake numerical analysis of geotechnical applications, and highlights the limitations and uncertainties in these approaches. It contextualises the numerical approaches with the consideration of various applications (such as foundations, slopes and tunnels). The module introduces the concept of the design method, taking the outcome of analyses (either numerical or analytical) to produce robust designs that are resilient to changes in loading/environmental conditions, over the working life of the asset, and it draws on approaches in various design standards (such as EC7).
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Evaluate and apply numerical methods to investigate the behaviour of the ground in various geotechnical situations (such as slopes, foundations, and tunnels), and to understand of the limitations of these methods
