Description Professional Skills for Geotechnical Engineering introduces a number of procedures and practices associated with professional practice. This includes contractual and procedural considerations (e.g. commercial context, risk management, project and change management, and relevant legal matters including intellectual property rights), legal requirements (such as health and safety law and CDM regulations), risk assessments and method statements. Design aspects (including BIM) and teamworking (including equality, diversity, and inclusion) are also considered. The module also focuses on a geotechnical engineering-based team challenge to draw these aspects together.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Understand and applies the commercial, legal and regulatory frameworks in which engineers practice in when undertaking geotechnical engineering projects
  • [contributing to: AHEP - C8 (K&S); AHEP - C10 (K&S); AHEP - C15 (K&S)]
  • Apply risk and project management techniques to mitigate risks associated with projects (including security risks) and ensure successful completion of the project
  • [contributing to: AHEP - C9 (K&S); AHEP - C10 (K&S); AHEP - C14 (K&S)]
  • Evaluate teamwork and leadership roles, including negotiation techniques, conflict management, development techniques and, diversity, equality and inclusivity considerations.
  • [contributing to: AHEP - C11 (K&S); AHEP - M16 (K&S) ]
  • Understand and applies techniques to communicate complex engineering matters
  • [contributing to: AHEP - M17 (K&S)]
  • Evaluate and apply design principles, including the need to consider sustainability and other social responsibilities, whilst working in a group to develop a cost effective and resilient solutions that minimises impacts on society, the economy and environment
  • [contributing to: AHEP - M5 (K&S); AHEP - C6 (K&S); AHEP - M7 (K&S)]
  • Takes responsibility for decisions taken and designs produced, collaborates and promotes team work and is committed to continued professional development

Assessment 38066-01 : Coursework : Coursework (100%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:
Group based activity* that is likely to contain several components, such as (but not limited to): practical activity(ies)*, health and safety/risk assessments, preparation of method statements, design commentary or other written reports, question and answers (100%)

Ideally the activities will take place in the module block, but due to the nature of the assessment(s), the potential need to use facilities shared with other modules/taught activities, the final activities of this module might have to be undertaken after the conclusion of the four-week module block.

(*if covid pandemic, or other unforeseen situation arises, that negatively impacts on the ability to work in groups in close proximity then a desk-based replacement will be undertaken)

Reassessment:
