Description The research project is an independent comprehensive piece of novel research which is carried out in one of a broad range of topics related to Materials Science and Engineering over the full duration of the programme. These are conducted in any one of the Research Groups within the School of Metallurgy and Materials related to the students interests. This module will develop the student’s ability to work as an independent engineering/scientific research and develop their ability to critically evaluate the literature in the given subject as well as plan and conduct complex and novel experiments to address any research gaps found.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Understand the use of technical literature and other information sources
  • Demonstrate an understanding of state-of-the-art developments in a specific area relevant to the research project allocated
  • Understand the need for a high level of professional and ethical conduct in engineering
  • Use and understand appropriate research techniques and testing methods and apply these successfully in a given research area.
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan, conduct and report on an extended research project in the form of a dissertation at MRes level
  • Demonstrate the ability for project management, time management, information management and working in groups
  • Demonstrate the skill of effective written and oral communication appropriate to the intended audience
