This module provides the tools for examining critically the systems and subsystems that support rail-way operations and the associated planning functions. It allows students to develop a solid under-standing of the constraints and opportunities applicable to railway operations, including systems integration, timetabling, resource planning, maintenance and performance management, people and operational safety. The module also covers the governmental, financial, and societal contexts that influence railway operations and planning. The module is delivered through case studies, interactive lectures, and team activities to develop the knowhow and knowledge required to operate railways of all types. The teaching is supported by guest lecturers from industry.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Analyse critically and robustly opportunities for developing new railways or enhancing existing rail-way systems and their operations;
Propose concept designs and plans for new and existing railways, including passenger facilities and resource requirements, and communicate these effectively;
Assess railway feasibility based on demand for services and the necessary operations arrangements, taking into account environmental, economic, and societal factors;
Develop strategies for managing critical aspects of railway operations, such as performance, people, safety and security, maintenance processes and regulatory pressures;
Create a timetable and associated resource plan for a basic multi-route railway network and use appropriate modelling tools to demonstrate feasibility.
