Description
The aim of this module is to give students the necessary skills to design medical devices. The module will teach students across the whole medical device design process covering regulation, design, material selection, modelling, manufacture, mechanical testing and assessing performance in patients.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Describe the design process for medical devices
Demonstrate understanding of the regulatory aspects of medical devices
Select a range of materials that can be used for medical devices
Present a design of a medical device
Analyse a medical device using computational and analytical techniques
Devise an appropriate mechanical test for medical devices
Describe an appropriate manufacturing technique for medical devices, including appropriate packaging and labelling
Assess the performance of medical devices in patients
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions
Assessment:
100% coursework assignment to include design of a medical device with analysis of the device performance, and a proposed manufacturing method (maximum 4000 word assignment).
Reassessment:
100% coursework assignment in the supplementary period to include design of a medical device with analysis of the device performance, and a proposed manufacturing method (maximum 4000 word assignment).
