Description
Laboratory skills form a core aspect of Chemical Engineering. To be able to collect and correctly analyse data is also an essential skill. The module provides a synoptic aspect in showing how knowledge and understanding gained in other 1st year modules can be assimilated to help analyse chemical and physical problems.
Overall a number of experiments and simulations will be performed to gain these lab and data analysis skills in;
Chemistry; Transport Processes (fluid flow, heat transfer and mass transfer); Thermodynamics (chemical).
Students will be introduced to design of experiments protocols and the necessary computing and statistics required to analyse ‘large’ data sets.
Students will be guided through writing of laboratory reports and use of the literature and other resources (e.g. generative AI) in discussing and critiquing the results.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Write engineering laboratory reports, demonstrating suitable knowledge and use of the literature and relevant data analysis techniques;
Use knowledge and understanding from a range of sources in the solution of analysis problems;
Carry out laboratory techniques to a suitable standard, showing an understanding of relevant health and safety information and data collection methods.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions
Assessment: Class Tests (10%) Coursework; portfolio of lab activities (90%)
