Description Complementing the weekly small-group tutorial sessions that are offered by the School of Mathematics these Personal and Academic Tutoring modules are designed to help students successfully make the transition to the study of mathematics at university level.

Through their alignment with the compulsory Year 1 exam-based modules students will receive the opportunity to receive individual, group and online feedback to help structure their mathematical learning. In conjunction they will develop essential skills in independent learning, the application of technology to aid problem solving and communication mathematics, mathematical writing, and personal/careers awareness.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Use mathematical software packages to manipulate mathematical expressions and to solve appropriate problems.
  • Better understand the mathematical topics covered in Year 1 through direct experimentation with the computer.
  • Write, develop and structure, mathematical arguments appropriately and consistently and present these effectively using appropriate mathematical software.
  • Appreciate, and communicate, the existence and nature of current mathematical research and understand the diverse range of careers arising from the study of a mathematical sciences degree in the context of their own aspirations.
  • Manage their own learning and possess strategies for engaging with mathematical feedback.
Assessment 34044-01 : Raw Module Mark : Coursework (100%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Workshop Tasks (45%): Three individual workshop tasks which include written and online exercises.

Problem Sheet submission (30%): Meaningful submission of weekly problem sheets associated with compulsory Year 1 exam-based modules.

Tutorial Assignments (25%): Completion of bi-weekly (every two weeks) activities or exercises to align with the weekly tutorial programme
