Description This module will cover the fundamental principles of computer systems, including how information is represented in computers, how computer programs are executed, the relationship between software and hardware, reasoning about programs, and the foundations of operating systems and network technologies.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate understanding of the fundamental principles of computer hardware
  • Explain the relationship between computer hardware and software and be able to analyse a computer program in terms of the hardware operations required
  • Reason about and analyse the complexity and performance of computer programs
  • Describe the role of an operating system, explain its component parts, and reason about its behaviour.
  • Demonstrate and apply an understanding of the core principles of computer networks
