This introductory module develops confidence and knowledge of basic mathematical skills and problem solving techniques. Topics covered include basic algebra, elementary geometry, vectors, trigonometry functions, graphs, indices and logarithms and an introduction to calculus ideas. Practical applications related to science and engineering will be used as appropriate.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Use numbers and algebraic expressions to solve problems and equations, including sums of APs and GPs
Solve simple problems in geometry
Work with (i) circular measure & trigonometric functions; (ii) exponential functions & logarithms
Sketch simple graphs and differentiate & integrate simple functions to find gradients and areas
